New Year Resolutions

Well, the New Year is almost here (or just passed, depending upon when you’re reading this).
As usual, the team here have been exchanging ideas for their New Year resolutions and they range from the noble to the odd (not mentioning any names!). So, we thought we’d make a few similar recommendations for you, with a bit of an orientation towards agricultural machinery for sure!
1. Do more regular maintenance on your equipment. Maybe you do more than enough already but if it tends to get put on the back burner as a low-priority (we’ve all done it!) then change your ways. It’ll save you a lot of money in the medium term...Read More

Thought of the Month - Peace of Mind

 Peace of Mind
Once upon a time, Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers.
This was in the initial days. While they were travelling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there.”...Read More

Thought For The Month - "Worry Not Bug"

For months I had noticed the painted rock that sat on Karen's coffee table. The rock had a painted face on it with a smile that just made you smile back when you looked at it.

I examined the rock and painted on the bottom was "why worry"?

Curious I asked Karen where she got the rock..Read More

Thought of the Month – The law of the garbage truck

Have you had a bad day then to top it all, someone starts giving you grief for absolutely no good reason?
Well, it’s happened to almost everyone and the temptation to start firing broadsides back can be very strong.

Yet there’s another way of seeing things that we’d like to share with you here by way of a nice little story.

The law of the garbage truck

“One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches....Read More

Thought of the Month – The Fence

Once there was a young man who continued to have trouble controlling his temper.
His father came up with an idea of how to help him with his temper.
“Take this bag of nails,” the father said, leading his son to a fence in front of their home. “Every time you lose your temper, you must hammer a nail into the fence.”
The son, eager to improve himself, agreed to do as his father asked...Read More

Are Driverless Tractors a Practical Proposition?

The media has been full of speculation recently relating to the 'connected car'.

Just in case you've missed it, this is all about the increasing numbers of cars that are built with an Internet connection integrated into their design. That can be used for in-car entertainment, communications systems and it might also have a role in things such as problem/diagnosis, resolution and perhaps ultimately driverless vehicles.

What has this got to do with tractors?

Predictably, this publicity as reawakened the debate relating to driverless tractors.
The logic here goes that the technical challenge of producing a driverless tractor is essentially far less demanding than that of the driverless car...Read More

Does a Self-Steering Tractor Appeal to you?

The ‘connected car’ is now here and every so often you’ll see demonstrations of them on TV, as they apparently effortlessly drive themselves around city streets and park without any human intervention.
It’s very impressive.
What you might not know though is that driverless tractors are also a technical reality and the first demonstrations of such go back some decades now! They use a combination of GPS and internet technology to ‘strut their stuff’ when ploughing and you won’t see a driver anywhere near them....Read More

Cheap or Quality Tools – Here’s How We See Things

It’s not our place to tell our customers how much they should be spending on their tools.

Even so, your Kubota tractor or Kubota mowers will be built to the highest of quality standards and it might be a pity to put elements of that at risk by trying to perform basic maintenance with sub-standard tools.

Now we’re not here to plug any particular brand of tools or warn you against those made in a given country. In fact, many countries are capable of producing both top-class tools and rubbish ones...Read More

GM Crop Debate Re-Ignites

The very recent news that the Scottish government has banned genetically modified crops in the country has once again set the wires alight with arguments from both the pro and anti-GM brigades.

Safety - a marketing advantage?

Ostensibly, this decision and those like it taken by other legislatures around the world are branded for communication and PR as a 'public health issue'.

Yet even some of the most vehement anti-GM crop combatants might well be inclined to agree, albeit reluctantly, that there is very little hard evidence of there being any health issues associated with the consumption of GM produce. Numerous scientific studies have been published, many of which appear to blatantly contradict each other, yet few have gone as far as to suggest a direct health issue...Read More

Dangerous Farm Machinery Practices Still Seen

Almost every year, farmers and other farm workers are seriously injured or even die entirely unnecessarily in accidents involving farm machinery.

Now nobody is suggesting that some of the heavy agricultural equipment used in modern farming is ever going to be entirely 100% 'safe'. Whatever the philosophical issues might be, when you have human beings and heavy mobile machinery in close proximity to each other, the occasional accident is going to happen irrespective of the very best in precautions...Read More

El Nino Giving Unpredictable Weather for Farmers

At the start of 2015, climatologists around the globe were predicting significant meteorological effects as a result of strengthening El Nino patterns.
The bottom line was that it was predicted to be one of the strongest for many years and that in turn may lead to exceptionally unusual weather in many parts of both the northern and southern hemispheres.
However, by the middle of the year the position was starting to look rather less clear cut. Although the El Nino effect was clearly very pronounced it didn't seem to be a yielding quite the meteorological catastrophes that had been predicted earlier on...Read More

The Low Down on Purchasing Second Hand Tractors

When buying second hand items, it's very important to consider a number of things, as well as complete various maintenance and condition checks on what you are purchasing. Similarly when buying a used car, buying a second hand tractor or farm machinery carries with it a lot more ramifications than buying something like a second hand piece of furniture or clothing. Whilst there is the obvious procedures of checking the tyres and the motor, it is equally important to check the other often less visible factors that may affect the workings of your machinery in the future...Read More

Avoiding Mechanical Garden Work in the Rain

Professional farmers and the like often can't afford to be too choosy about what jobs they do irrespective of the weather at the time.
If something has to be done, then it often needs to be done 'then' - "come rain or shine". It's also worth remembering that farmers are professionals and do these jobs day in, day out.

Top Questions to Ask When Buying Second-Hand Agricultural Machinery

If you are trying to make your dollars and cents go a little bit further than normal, then buying pre-used agricultural machinery might be a sensible thing to consider.

However, it's not exactly uncommon to hear stories of woe from people who have bought second-hand and then had cause to regret doing so.

If you'd like to avoid joining their number, then some of the following tips just might come in handy.

  • If you are considering purchasing used equipment, machinery and other forms of agricultural kit, it might be advisable to think first of all about a professional dealer in such items. There are two main arguments for doing so. The first is that you are likely to be sure that the items concerned were given a thorough pre-sale check. The second is that you may be able to get some sort of post-sales servicing and guarantees. Those two things might be unlikely if you are purchasing from a private individual.... Read More
